Gazela Visits Oyster Bay

Gazela returned to Penn's Landing on Thu. 10/21/2010 at 1:00 pm. If conditions permit, she will be sailing up the Delaware River under full sail, proudly displaying her Phillies banner. She is returning from an enormously successful trip to Oyster Bay, Long Island, where she was the featured vessel for their annual Oyster Festival. The festival boasts attendance of 300,000 and Gazela’s deck was crowded at all times. The visitor count for both days was 6,500! The captain for this trip is Richard Bailey, former captain of HMS Rose.

Cabaret Shows End for the Season

Cabaret Red Light's cast of pirates, wenches, mermaids, and dancing girls ended their very successful debut season aboard Gazela on Sunday, September 26, with a sold out show. Besides being great entertainment and a lot of fun, these shows have brought many new people to Gazela and one visitor quipped that Gazela was as memorable as the show. Clearly, this has proved to be a winning formula, and plans for 2011 are already in the making.

Thank you to Peter Gaffney and Anna Frangiosa and the cast of Cabaret Red Light for putting on these shows, and even sailing on Gazela to Brooklyn. Kudos also to the crew of Gazela who built the stage and manned the shows, all orchestrated by Gina Pickton, our volunteer coordinator.

Despite the Cabaret shows being over, there are still two more great events coming in October! On October 8th, we welcome shanteyman Geoff Kaufman for a "Sail back in time, musically" - join in and sing the shanteys that sailors of yore did as they heaved and hauled. Click here for tickets. Then beware! Haunted Ship returns from October 27th to 31st. Tickets will go on sale soon and there will be a childrens' show on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Gazela in Atlantic Basin, NYC

Gazela docked in New York City for the first time in 10 years. Captain Rob Rustchak and a crew of 29, including seven performers from Cabaret Red Light, sailed Gazela slowly up the Jersey coast, arriving at the Atlantic Basin in Brooklyn. Besides being greeted by many curious vessels and even a deferential ferry, Gazela's arrival caught the notice of the New York Times as well as that of two well-known maritime bloggers, Will van Dorp's Tugster and The Old Salt Blog.

MAY 14, 2010 - Notes from "the Super," Patrick Flynn

The third time was the charm for Gazela's rudder, which was finally installed onto the ship on Tuesday. Work is now underway to install the steering gear onto the new rudder. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Last weekend was a busy one, despite the high winds precluding any work aloft. Perhaps the better weather predicted for this weekend will allow us to finish bending on the major sails.

Jupiter will be back to the barge this weekend to continue the water heater replacement that was begun last weekend.

Gazela's focs'l has been cleaned of lots of miscellaneous belongings, which are now in a Lost & Found area in the hold. Please look through this for any of your stuff before it is sent to a better life elsewhere.

APRIL 20, 2010 - Notes from the President, PSPG

Over 90 people attended the Annual Dinner on Moshulu on April 6th, and a grand time was had by all. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Gay Burgiel Gazela Volunteer of the Year Award to George Wisser, and the Captain Jim Andersen Jupiter Volunteer of the Year Award to Joe Schuck. The William Wikoff Smith Award was presented to the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation for its "support and encouragement over the years, and its assistance in preserving the historic vessels Gazela and Jupiter."

Naomi Kaminsky spoke about "The Volunteer Project", and has collected about a dozen stories so far. Check it out and then add your own.

Mary Smith told the crowd how proud she was of their efforts to keep Gazela sailing, and surprised everyone by saying she wanted to help Gazela sail to Portugal for a triumphant return visit.
